The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is a very powerful piece of literature. Although it is essentially a work of fiction, it becomes all too apparent that it is based on Tressell鈥檚 own life experiences as a working class Englishman at the turn of the twentieth century. This makes the book even more fascinating,Discount UGG Boots.
Tressell was obviously of the opinion that the working class were their own worst enemy when it came to defeating the 鈥渆vils鈥?of the capitalist system, and his frustration with this was understandable when you consider the apparent negative and defeatist mindset of his fellow workers. I mean, some of the working class characters in this book seemed to be very confused when it came to their 鈥渕asters鈥?鈥,nike free run 3 women?idolising them on the one hand, and then on the other,http://www.fakeuggsonlinestore.com/, hating them (and hating themselves even more as a result). It鈥檚 no wonder that Tressell felt the need to rant on about this on more than one occasion.
This frustration is played out by the main character Owen, as his contempt for his comrades, who seem to be committed to preserving the status quo 鈥?even though it results in them being in a constant state of semi-starvation and downtrodden poverty, is completely understandable.
Without wishing to stand on my own soap box (this is supposed to be a review after all), one does wonder how sustainable and moralistic capitalism really is. Has the world really improved in the century that has passed since The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists was first published? I would wager that even the most blue-blooded of capitalists would re-consider his views after reading this excellent book.
I totally agreed when, in the book, an ex-socialist explained to Barrington, 鈥渆nlightenment will never be brought about by arguing with people.鈥?Although Barrington begrudgingly knew this to be true, it didn鈥檛 stop him arguing his case. People who are passionate about their beliefs 鈥?especially when they believe that they鈥檙e fighting to defeat injustice 鈥?have to continue their struggle to educate the un-informed.
Read this book and it will, along with its heroes, Owen and Barrington, leave a mark on you for the rest of your life. It鈥檚 that powerful,UGG Clerance.
Unfortunately, Tressell was unable to experience the fact that so many people enjoyed his work as he tragically died, in poverty, before it was published. If he were still with us today he would undoubtedly be dismayed at how capitalism has taken a hold of the modern world.
Is Socialism the answer? I don鈥檛 know. But the way that Owen (Tressell) explains it in The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists leads me to believe that it could just be a viable alternative to today鈥檚 way of life.
